King David certainly experienced many troubles and afflictions. David was chosen by God to replace Saul as King of Israel. God had rejected Saul and had Samuel anoint David as King to replace him. However, Saul still kept the title and the throne, while he was not the rightful king of Israel. He became envious of David and was filled with envy, pride and hatred. Saul knew that God had rejected him and God's Spirit had departed from him. Instead of humbling himself before God, he spent the remaining years of his life pursuing King David. Saul wanted to kill him. However, God protected David from murderous Saul. David wrote in Psalm 34:19, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all," (NKJV).
