Jeremiah was a prophet chosen by God to be His mouthpiece to the southern kingdom of Judah.  The nation had fallen into great apostasy and God's judgment was imminent.  Nebuchadnezzar had besieged Jerusalem and the Jews were about to be taken captive to Babylon.  However, God promised that after 70 years in captivity, He would have a remnant return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. To confirm His promise, God had Jeremiah buy a parcel of land and place the deed in a safe place, because after 70 years, Jeremiah and his descendants would return to Jerusalem as landowners.  Yes, the future looked bleak, the people were about to be taken into captivity.  However, God promised restoration.  God is a date setter and a promise keeper.  Jeremiah 32:27 says, "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind.  Is there anything too hard for me?"
